Model Compounds for Myoglobin, Hemoglobin and Cytochrome c

Discrimination between O2 and CO binding to the respiratory proteins Myoglobin (Mb) and Hemoglobin (Hb) is vital for aerobic life. There is still an ongoing controversy about the nature as well as the mechanism of this discrimination. It is widely believed that the distal histidine stabilizes bound O2 by a hydrogen-bond interaction. Current studies will focus on the examination of the hydrogen-bonding in novel Mb/Hb mimics using EPR and RR spectroscopies.

Cytochrome c is the mitochondrial electron transport protein and apoptosis effector. We are interested in synthesizing a series of model compounds for cytochrome c and in examining the possible influence of the surrounding microenvironment on their redox properties.
