Switchable Container Molecules

Water soluble container molecules, based on the resorcin[4]arene platform, can switch between an open and a closed conformation. The closed form binds cycloalkanes with high strength and selectivity, whereas acid-induced switching converts the host to an open form that releases the encapsulated guest. This process is reversible by neutralization of the acid.

Modification of the side flaps leads to a variety of applications and thus is an interesting field of research.
