Donor-Acceptor-Substituted Carbon-Rich Macrocycles

Cyanoethynylethene (CEE) is an interesting molecular scaffold that combines the properties of both tetraethynylethene and tetracyanoethylene. Donor-substituted CEEs show exceptionally strong intramolecular charge-transfer interactions. Expanded radialenes and radiaannulenes incorporating this chromophore would become a novel class of materials for opto-electronic applications. The synthesis and the electronic properties of the donor-acceptor-substituted carbon-rich macrocycles are now investigated.
