Structure-Based Design and Synthesis of CatL and SHMT Inhibitors

Human cathepsin L (hCatL) is cystein protease known to be upregulated in variety of human cancers and has been considered as a target for cancer treatment. Highly similar cathepsin L-like enzymes rhodesain and falcipain-2 are promising targets for treatment of African sleeping sickness and malaria, respectively. Serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) is an essential enzyme for Plasmodium falciparum, causative agent of malaria. The aim of the project is to develop potent inhibitors of these enzymes to fight above mentioned diseases.
